On a PlayStation 5, Settings > Storage is the quiet screen that decides whether Grand Theft Auto VI finishes downloading before launch night, or whether you are still deleting old games while the rest of the household asks why the console is stuck at two percent. PlayStation's own support page for the game now lists a hard number: make sure you have 212 GB free. Rockstar's preload note puts the same ceiling at up to 212 GB, depending on the device. That is not a small tidy-up. On an 825 GB PS5, it eats a big slice of the drive you thought you still had for other games. On a 512 GB Series S, it takes more than half of the usable space.
Preload for people who already pre-ordered starts next week, not on launch day. The game itself still goes live Thursday, Nov. 19, 2026, at midnight local time on PlayStation 5. The download window opens earlier, and the two consoles do not start at the same clock time.
On PS5, preload for pre-order customers starts at midnight local time on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Eastern Time that is 12:00 AM ET as Monday night turns into Tuesday. Pacific Time gets there three hours later. New Zealand starts first because local midnight arrives first.
On Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar set one global start: 12:00 AM GMT on Nov. 10. That is 7:00 PM ET on Monday, Nov. 9, and 4:00 PM PT the same afternoon. So in the same U.S. city, Xbox players can start hours before PS5 players.
Retail boxes still matter for gift buyers. They still will not spare anyone the download. Physical (code-in-box) copies are expected at retailers starting Nov. 12. The box holds a download code, not a playable disc. Once that code is redeemed on the account that will play the game, the console joins the preload like a digital purchase.
Standard Edition is $79.99 (price as of ; official source (opens in a new tab)). Ultimate Edition is $99.99 (price as of ; official source (opens in a new tab)). Both are digital on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. Ultimate is not sold as a physical box; Standard box owners buy the Ultimate upgrade after they redeem the code, if they want it.
Free the space before the clock hits
Treat 212 GB as the planning number, not a guess. PlayStation Support states it flatly for PS5. Rockstar's wording is "up to" 212 GB depending on the device, so some consoles may need a little less. Leave a cushion either way. Games update after launch, and patches need room to unpack.
A quick Storage check tonight beats finding out you are short on space after the download window opens. On PS5: home screen > Settings > Storage. Delete games you are done with, or move them to an expanded SSD or USB drive if you already use one. PlayStation's preload post also suggests looking at ways to extend PS5 storage ahead of GTA VI. On Xbox, open Settings > System > Storage and clear or move games the same way. Do this before Nov. 9 evening if you are on Xbox in the U.S., or before Nov. 10 midnight local if you are on PS5.
Slow or capped home internet makes the early window matter more. Nine days of download time is the point of preload. Waiting until Nov. 19 with 212 GB still to pull can mean many hours of waiting on a slower connection.
Leave the console ready while you sleep
PlayStation Support lays out the PS5 steps in detail. After the pre-order is on the account, open Game Library > Your Collection, select the GTA VI pre-order, open the countdown timer, and leave the checkbox next to GTA VI selected so auto-download is on. Under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Before the preload window opens, put the console in Rest Mode from the control center (Power > Enter Rest Mode). That combination is what lets the download start while the TV is off.
If the title shows up under Downloads/Uploads but sits idle, pause it, then resume. Still stuck: cancel and delete that download entry, go back to Game Library, select GTA VI, and turn auto-download on again. Confirm you are signed into the same account that placed the pre-order or redeemed the box code, that Wi-Fi or Ethernet is actually up, that free space is still above 212 GB, and that system software is current (Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, with automatic download and install turned on).
On Xbox Series X|S, turn on automatic updates and leave the console on or in Sleep so the title pulls when the GMT window opens. Microsoft's Xbox support pages cover those power and update settings.
Shared household consoles need one more check on PlayStation. Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play should be Enabled if other profiles on that PS5 are supposed to play the same copy after launch.
GTA VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, with descriptors that include intense violence, strong language, nudity and strong sexual content. Family accounts and parental controls on PlayStation and Xbox exist for a reason here. Set age limits and spending limits on the child's account before a preload finishes and the game opens at midnight on Nov. 19.
If the gift is a physical box, plan for two things at once: the Nov. 12 retail date, and enough storage plus internet on the console that will redeem the code. The cardboard does not replace the 212 GB download. Digital pre-orders that are already paid avoid that shipping wait and start on Nov. 10 (PS5) or the evening of Nov. 9 (Xbox in U.S. time zones).
