GTA 6 Arrives Nov. 19: Price, Preload Date, the Missing Disc and What Parents Should Know

What happened: Grand Theft Auto VI comes out Thursday, Nov. 19. It costs $79.99 (price as of Oct 28, 2026; official source (opens in a new tab)) for the Standard Edition on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Digital buyers can start downloading it a week early, on Nov. 12.

What this means for you: If GTA 6 is on someone's holiday list, there are a few things to know before you buy. The store box doesn't hold a disc. The game is rated M for Mature 17+. And the digital pre-order bonus turns into a paid monthly subscription after the first month unless you cancel it.

The details

GTA 6 is set in Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida, and players follow two criminals, Jason and Lucia, who end up tangled in a conspiracy across the state after an easy score goes wrong. It's a single-player game. Rockstar released the launch trailer on Oct. 15.

Here's the launch at a glance:

On PlayStation, the game unlocks at 5:00 AM UTC on Nov. 19. Daylight saving time ends Nov. 1, so Eastern Time is UTC-5 by then, and that's 12:00 AM ET (midnight) as Wednesday night turns into Thursday.

The Ultimate Edition adds extra vehicles, weapons and clothing woven into the story. Everyone who pre-orders or buys through Nov. 19, launch day, gets a set of in-game items called the Vintage Vice City Pack.

The box has no disc

This is the detail that will surprise a lot of gift buyers. The physical version of GTA 6 comes with a download code inside the box. The point is to let people download the game ahead of launch day. So the box doesn't let you skip the download, and it doesn't help a console without good internet.

Our read: if you're buying for someone with slow or capped home internet, plan for a big download and start it the day the code arrives, Nov. 12. We haven't found an official file size yet.

Grand Theft Auto VI is announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PS4 owner can't play it, even with the box version, because it isn't available on PS4. Older Xbox One consoles and PCs aren't on the announced list.

What parents should know

The ESRB rated Grand Theft Auto VI M for Mature 17+. Its rating lists these content descriptors:

• Blood and Gore
• Intense Violence
• Mature Humor
• Nudity
• Strong Language
• Strong Sexual Content
• Use of Drugs and Alcohol

It also carries the In-Game Purchases notice, which means real money can be spent inside the game.

GTA games regularly feature profanity, violence, sexual themes and illegal acts, and are generally not recommended for children.

Our read: this is a game made for adults. If a younger teen has it on a wish list, the rating descriptors above are a fair list of what's in it, and they're a good starting point for a conversation.

Did you know? Grand Theft Auto V was also rated M in North America and PEGI 18 in Europe. GTA 6 also carries an M rating from the ESRB.

The free month that turns into a bill

Buy the digital Standard or Ultimate Edition on PlayStation Store on or before Nov. 19 (launch day), and you get one month of GTA+, Rockstar's subscription. It's a nice bonus, but read the fine print. After that month, the membership continues at the regular monthly price until it's canceled.

You have until March 31, 2027, to claim the month. When you claim it, the on-screen steps show the date the paid subscription starts. To stop it, go to Subscriptions Management in your PlayStation account settings and cancel before the next payment date.

If a child's account made the purchase, this is a charge that could surprise you on a card statement about a month after the free month is claimed.

What to do now

If you're buying it

1. Decide between digital and the box. Digital lets you preload on Nov. 12 and includes the free GTA+ month on PlayStation. The box also has a code and also lands Nov. 12.
2. Check that the console is a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S.
3. Make room on the console's storage ahead of time.
4. Download on Nov. 12 or as soon as you have the code, so it's ready to play when it unlocks on Nov. 19 (12:00 AM ET on PlayStation).

If you claim the GTA+ month on PlayStation

1. Look for the confirmation email after your purchase.
2. Follow the steps on the GTA+ product page.
3. Note the date the paid subscription begins.
4. Put a reminder on your calendar a few days before it.
5. Cancel in Subscriptions Management if you don't want to keep paying.

If your child plays on a PS5

Set age limits before the game arrives. On the console:

1. Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
2. Select your child.
3. Set Age level for games and apps and a Monthly Spending Limit.

You can also do this in the PlayStation Family app or on the web at Account Management > Family Management. When a child tries to start a blocked game, they can send you a request, and you get a notification and an email, and you can allow it in the PlayStation Family app or on the PlayStation website. For the controls to work, your child needs to have verified their email and be signed in on their own console account.

The music

Rockstar has already shown off the game's radio. The in-game stations include Cocoteo FM, Back Country Radio, AfroBank FM, The Chamber 106.6, Flash FM and Dirty South Classics, plus in-game podcasts. The launch trailer debuted "Flower in a Hurricane" from the game's original score composers, Justice, featuring Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.
