Apple's first folding iPhone has been on sale for barely a day, and a small number of early owners are already posting photos of inner screens that cracked right down the fold. Here's what's actually known, what isn't, and what to do if it happens to yours.

What happened: Since iPhone Duo went on sale on Friday, October 23, early owners have been posting photos of the 7.6-inch inner screen broken along the hinge, usually with a bright line of pixels running across one side of the display. The most detailed account comes from an owner in Australia who says the screen cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings. Apple has made no public statement about the reports as of Saturday morning.

What this means for you: So far this is a handful of reported cases in a big global launch, and nobody outside Apple knows yet how many phones are affected or why. If yours folds normally, keep using it, but learn the warning signs below. If the inner screen cracks or the hinge suddenly feels wrong, stop folding it, document it and take it to Apple. You don't need to fix anything yourself, and you're inside the one-year warranty. If you bought it from Apple, you're also inside the 14-day return window.

The details

Where the screens are breaking

Every report we've found involves the inner, folding screen, not the 5.4-inch outer screen. The damage sits on the fold line where the hinge supports the panel. In most photos there's a crack or dark mark along the crease and a bright line (sometimes several) running across the right side of the display.

That fold line is the most demanding spot on the phone. The inner screen is a stack of more than 10 very thin layers: a matte nano-texture polymer cover layer on top, strong glass above and below the folding OLED panel, and a titanium plate underneath. Special adhesives let those layers slide past one another as the phone bends, and the hinge, built from more than 100 parts, supports the middle of the screen when it's open. Our launch-day explainer covers the full specs.

What early owners are reporting

Early owners are reporting a handful of distinct cases, not a flood. Here's what has surfaced so far:

  • Australia, about six hours in. The owner says the phone had been opened fewer than 20 times. While opening it to show a friend, they felt something under the screen near the hinge, then heard a crack, and the panel broke along the fold. They say there were no marks on the screen or hinge beforehand. An Apple Store replaced the phone on the spot. The r/iPhoneDuo moderators say they reviewed additional photos and Apple's repair paperwork, and marked the post as verified while noting they couldn't confirm the cause.
  • During setup. A second owner says the hinge turned stiff after roughly four folds, and the screen cracked with a loud pop when they pushed past the resistance.
  • A Toronto Apple Store. A photo shows a broken unit inside the store. Its history isn't known.
  • China. Several photos show damaged phones, including store demo units, from the first hours of sales there. Most of these come without a backstory. The r/iPhoneDuo moderators have asked readers to treat one compiled set as unverified, and demo phones get handled hard, so damage from rough use can't be ruled out.

You can see some of the damaged phones in photos of cracked units in China posted by @UniverseIce on X and a cracked-during-setup photo shared by @oneuios on X.

Across Australia, the U.S., Canada and China, the visible pattern is strikingly similar: same spot, same bright line. That consistency is why the reports drew attention so quickly. It is not proof of a design flaw.

What the durability tests showed

Before launch, two well-known reviewers ran their own folding tests, and neither screen cracked. Joanna Stern folded her review unit 32,640 times over four nights, with a case on. Her verdict: "after 32,000 folds, it felt pretty much the same as day one." YouTuber Tim Pan folded his 11,500 times, 1,000 of those in freezing conditions. The hinge held up, but the crease became much more visible.

Our read: those tests and these reports don't contradict each other. Folding tests show how a good unit wears over time. A failure within the first 20 folds looks more like an individual defect, such as something in the hinge or a part assembled out of tolerance pressing on the panel, than like normal wear. Nobody has confirmed any cause, and we're not going to guess beyond that.

Apple's position so far

Apple hasn't commented publicly on the cracked screens. What it has done is publish a batch of iPhone Duo support pages on launch day, including a troubleshooting guide for hinge problems. That guide covers a phone that won't open or close completely, unexpected noise while folding, a loose hinge, a bent or broken hinge, and frame damage that affects the hinge. There are no diagnostics or software fixes for hinge issues: no restart, update or restore will help. The guide's last step is replacing the inner display assembly, and it warns that a new part may not solve the problem.

That's the key detail. When troubleshooting can't fix an iPhone Duo hinge, the repair is a new inner display assembly, so a hinge fault effectively becomes an inner-screen repair. Apple's full iPhone Duo repair manual, also published Friday, includes procedures for the cover layer, the inner display and the inner display assembly. As of Saturday morning, Duo parts still weren't listed in Apple's Self Service Repair Store, and these repairs require specialized fixtures anyway. Leave it to Apple.

What a repair costs

Apple's one-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects and doesn't cover accidental damage. Apple inspects the phone and decides which one it is. In the Australian case above, the owner says the store replaced the phone on the spot.

If Apple decides the damage isn't covered, here's what its U.S. out-of-warranty estimates look like for iPhone Duo:

AppleCare+ and AppleCare One charge much less for accidents, and there are no service fees for mechanical failures:

Final fees depend on inspection, and Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own out-of-warranty prices. Check the iPhone screen repair page for current estimates.

What to do now

If your inner screen has cracked or shows a line:

  1. Stop folding it. Don't open and close it to "check" again, and don't push through a stiff hinge. Use the outer screen.
  2. Document it. Take clear photos of the inner screen, both sides of the hinge and all four edges, plus a short video of any line or flicker. Note when it happened, roughly how many times you'd opened it and whether it was in a case. Keep your receipt.
  3. Back it up. Make sure an iCloud or computer backup is current before you hand it over, since a replacement phone means restoring your data.
  4. Check your coverage. Enter your serial number at Apple's coverage checker to confirm your warranty and any AppleCare coverage.
  5. Contact Apple. Start a request at support.apple.com/repair or in the Apple Support app, or book a Genius Bar appointment. If you bought from Apple, you can also walk into an Apple Store. Explain that the screen cracked during normal opening, show your photos and ask for it to be assessed as a hardware fault.
  6. Know your return window. Apple's standard U.S. return policy gives you 14 calendar days from the day you received the item for a return or exchange. If you bought from a carrier or another store, its own policy applies.

If yours is fine, a few habits help:

  • Keep sand and grit away from the hinge, and make sure the hinge is clean before you open the phone.
  • Before closing it, clear everything off the inner screen. Folding a key, coin or other hard object inside can damage it.
  • Never peel off the matte cover layer. It's part of the display. Adding a screen protector to the inner screen can also affect display performance.
  • Clean it with the phone turned off, using a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. No compressed air.
  • Watch for warning signs: a hinge that suddenly feels stiff or loose, a pop or grinding sound, a bump under the screen near the fold or a new bright line. If you notice any of them, stop folding and have Apple look at it.

Still deciding whether to buy one? Our read: it's reasonable to wait a week or two and see whether these reports stay rare. If you do buy, put AppleCare on your shortlist. You can add it in Settings within 60 days of purchase. Our iPhone Duo buyer's guide breaks down storage, prices and who should wait.

We'll update this story when Apple comments or the picture changes.
