One iPhone Duo owner set up the new phone on "Medium," then wished they had picked "Large," and went looking for the switch. After an hour with Apple Support, a senior advisor gave the answer: there isn't one. The only way to change it is to erase the phone and set it up again.
The setting is Display Zoom, and on Apple's first folding iPhone it shows up exactly once. During setup, an Appearance screen asks how you want text and icons to look, with three choices: Default, Medium or Large. On other recent iPhones, you can change your mind later under Settings, then Appearance, then Display Zoom. On the iPhone Duo that option isn't in Settings at all, and it's still missing on iOS 27.2, the newest software for the phone.
Owners first noticed it last week. One spotted it on a demo Duo in an Apple Store. Others found out after setup, when they looked for the option in Settings and came up empty, in posts on Reddit, the MacRumors forums and a German-language phone forum. Apple hadn't said anything publicly about it when we published, so there's no word yet on whether this is a bug, a design choice for the folding screen, or something a future update will bring back.
If you're happy with the size you picked, none of this matters to you. For anyone who picked Default and squints at the inner screen, or for a parent whose phone was set up by a family member who chose the smallest size by habit, it matters a lot. Display Zoom is the setting that makes everything bigger at once: text, app icons, buttons and the bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Plenty of people who wear reading glasses lean on it.
If you haven't set up your Duo yet
This is the easy case. When the Appearance screen comes up, slow down and look at the preview before you tap Continue. If you're setting the phone up for someone else, hand it to them at this step and let them choose. If there's any doubt, Large is the safer pick, since a little too big is easier to live with than too small.
If you're still shopping, ask to look at Settings on a demo unit, then Appearance, so you can see for yourself whether the option has come back by the time you buy.
If the screen is already too small
You don't have to erase the phone to make things easier to read. Several of the iPhone's other text and screen settings are still on the Duo, and between them they cover most of what Display Zoom did.
- Open Settings, tap Appearance, then tap Text Size and drag the slider to the right. This makes the text bigger in apps that support it, including Mail, Messages, Notes, Calendar and Settings.
- On the same screen, turn on Bold Text. Heavier letters are easier to read even at the same size.
- For even bigger text, open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size, then Larger Text. Turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes and move the slider.
- To magnify the whole screen for a moment, go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Zoom, and turn on Zoom. Then double-tap the screen with three fingers to zoom in or out.
None of these makes app icons and buttons bigger the way Display Zoom does, and very large text can push buttons around in some apps, so go up one notch at a time. One MacRumors forum member also pointed to the Home Screen's own icon option: touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen until the icons jiggle, tap Edit, then Customize, and pick the larger icon size. That enlarges the app icons on your Home Screen but leaves everything else the same.
If you really want a different Display Zoom
For now, the advisor's answer is the only one there is: erase the phone and set it up again. That's a big step, and it isn't something to do in a hurry.
- Make a fresh backup first. Open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, then iCloud Backup, and tap Back Up Now. Wait for it to finish.
- Make sure you know your Apple Account password and have your phone number handy. You'll need them to sign back in.
- Open Settings, tap General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Erase All Content and Settings, and follow the steps.
- Restore from your backup when setup asks, and when the Appearance screen comes up, pick the size you want.
We haven't been able to confirm whether restoring a backup keeps your new size or brings back the old one, so check the screen as soon as setup finishes. If it isn't right, it's better to find out while the backup is fresh. If you'd rather not erase anything, it's reasonable to wait. Apple fixes plenty of first-month problems with software updates, and MacRumors has now reported this one, though there's no promise of a fix yet.
This is the latest bump for a phone that's barely two weeks old. Apple has already said it will replace some iPhone Duo inner screens with a display issue, which we covered in Apple Admits Some iPhone Duo Inner Screens Have an Issue and Will Replace Them. We'll update this story if Apple comments or a software update brings Display Zoom back.
