What happened: ChatGPT Finances is available in the United States to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on web, iOS and Android. Free and Go access has been rolling out since Friday, Oct. 2. You can securely connect bank and investment accounts through Plaid, add credit monitoring through Experian, keep a stock watchlist, get weekly updates, enter accounts by hand when a link is missing, and ask money questions out loud with voice support.
What this means for you: If you have been using ChatGPT for vague budget advice, Finances is the version that can ground answers in your real balances, spending and credit context. It is also the version that asks you to trust a bank link. Before you connect anything, know the hard line: ChatGPT can read enough to help you plan. It cannot move a dollar, pay a bill, trade a stock, change a retirement contribution, open or close an account, file your taxes, or act as your adviser.
The details
Money talk used to mean a spreadsheet, three banking apps and a sticky note on the fridge. Finances folds a dashboard and a chat into the same place you already ask ChatGPT other questions, which is either convenient or a little too close to your checking account, depending on the day. OpenAI's May 15 post, updated Oct. 2, puts the pitch in everyday language: connect accounts, find ways to save, understand spending, and make sense of investments with answers grounded in your finances.
The rollout timeline matters for Thursday, Nov. 5. Pro users in the U.S. got the preview on May 15. Plus and Pro users got the wider personal-finance experience on June 25. Free and Go users in the U.S. joined the Oct. 2 update. Help Center language now lists Free, Go, Plus and Pro on web, iOS and Android. So for Free and Go users, Finances has been rolling out for about a month.
Once accounts are connected, the Finances page can show widgets for spend by category, spend this month, upcoming payments, subscriptions, bills, net worth, portfolio distribution, a market update for equity holdings, and a credit score card when Experian is linked. You can reorder or hide widgets with Edit dashboard. Widgets only appear when there is enough connected data to fill them.
With voice support, you can ask money questions out loud instead of typing account names into a phone on the bus. That is useful for beginners, older adults, parents juggling household bills, and small-business owners who think faster than they type. It is also the moment to remember you are speaking account details into a device — so headphones, a quiet room and a locked phone still matter.
Credit monitoring is a separate connection from your bank links. Plaid handles financial institutions. Experian handles the credit report and score. You can use either or both. Checking your score through the Experian connection is a soft inquiry and does not affect your score. The feature shows your Experian report and a VantageScore 3.0 score (300–850). After you connect, the score and report update monthly. Credit monitoring can alert you to important changes such as a new inquiry, account or address. You can turn alerts off in notification settings without disconnecting Experian.
Stock watchlists let you follow tickers you care about. Weekly updates surface recurring insights so you do not have to remember to open the dashboard. Manual account entry covers the awkward middle: a private loan from a parent, a property, a credit union Plaid cannot reach, or a savings goal that has no bank feed at all. Tell ChatGPT in a finance chat and it can save key details as financial memories for later conversations. You can view or delete those memories from the Finances page.
Bank links run through Plaid, which connects to more than 12,000 financial institutions. After you authenticate, ChatGPT syncs and categorizes data. That usually takes a few minutes but in rare cases can take several hours. Connected data refreshes automatically. The Finances page shows the last sync time and flags accounts that need attention.
Privacy is the part worth reading twice before you tap Connect.
When accounts are linked, ChatGPT can use balances, transactions, investments and liabilities to answer questions. It cannot see full account numbers. It cannot change anything at the bank. Conversations that use connected finance data follow the same model-training setting you already chose for ChatGPT under Settings > Data controls. Temporary chats do not access connected financial accounts, do not create or use memories for personalization, and do not appear in your history. Turn on multi-factor authentication on your ChatGPT account so a stolen password is not enough to open the money view.
Disconnecting is the exit ramp. You can disconnect Finances in Settings > Apps > Finances, or manage individual accounts from the Accounts tab on the Finances page. Bank and credit connections are separate. When you disconnect, synced account data is deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, and data for that ChatGPT connection is deleted from Plaid within 30 days under Plaid's policies. Disconnecting does not wipe old chat transcripts; delete those conversations yourself if you want them gone. Experian works the same way: disconnect anytime, OpenAI deletes the underlying Experian report data within 30 days, and your actual credit file at Experian is untouched.
| Can do | Cannot do |

| Track Experian VantageScore 3.0 and credit factors | Open or close accounts |
| Save financial memories you share in chat | File taxes |
| Answer questions in text or voice on web, iOS, Android | Act as a financial, legal, tax or investment adviser |
| Disconnect and have synced data deleted within 30 days | See full account numbers or change bank settings |
OpenAI also publishes how it measures quality. Connected finance chats default to GPT-5.5 Thinking. OpenAI built an internal benchmark with more than 50 finance professionals; GPT-5.5 Thinking scored 79 out of 100 on that composite, and GPT-5.5 Pro scored 82.5. Those numbers are OpenAI's own test, not a promise about your budget. The blunt version: AI can make mistakes, spending breakdowns can miscount transfers or pending charges, and credit widgets reflect the latest Experian report rather than a live bank balance.
Did you know? Temporary ChatGPT chats do not see your linked banks. If you want a money question answered without pulling in Finances context, start a temporary chat.
Since the May preview, OpenAI has added weekly updates, credit monitoring, watchlists, voice, Android and manual entry. The one thing that has not changed is the action boundary. ChatGPT can help you understand a card balance. It still cannot pay that card for you.
What to do now
- Decide whether to connect at all. If you only want general money tips, you can use ChatGPT without Finances. Connect when you want answers grounded in your real accounts and you are comfortable with a Plaid and/or Experian link.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication first. In ChatGPT account security settings, enable MFA before you attach bank data.
- Connect bank accounts through Plaid. Open Finances in the sidebar and select Get started, or type
@Finances, connect my accountsin any chat. Choose Connect with Plaid, sign in at your institution, pick the accounts to share, then return to ChatGPT while it syncs. - Connect credit separately if you want the score. From the Finances home page, choose the credit-score option (or ask ChatGPT to connect it). Complete Experian's identity form inside Experian's flow — not by typing Social Security numbers into the chat. Return to ChatGPT to see the VantageScore 3.0 card.
- Add manual context for anything Plaid misses. Tell ChatGPT about a private loan, rent split, savings target or property you want remembered, then check Financial memories on the Finances page.
- Ask one practical question. Try “What subscriptions am I paying for?” or “Which factors are affecting my credit score?” and check the cited source data when ChatGPT shows it.
- Know the disconnect path before you need it. Settings > Apps > Finances removes the Finances connection. The Accounts tab on the Finances page removes one institution at a time. Experian can be disconnected without touching bank links. Synced data leaves OpenAI within 30 days after disconnect.
- Use temporary chats when you want a clean room. Temporary mode keeps Finances data out of that conversation.
Talking about money out loud into a chatbot feels strange the first time. Linking a bank makes it feel more strange. The fact that still lands hardest is the quiet one on OpenAI's own pages: after all the dashboards, voice answers and credit graphs, ChatGPT still cannot move a single dollar — and if you disconnect, the synced copy of your accounts is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI within 30 days.
